Wintergirls goodreads7/6/2023 Anderson heartbreakingly writes from Lia’s point of view, and throughout the book there are passages where Lia is fighting with inner demons. I don’t know how well Lia’s anorexia is portrayed, but to me it felt disturbingly real, the way that someone could get caught in an ever-downward spiral, not being able to stop. Wintergirls is not for the faint of heart it’s such a dark book, darker than Speak, I would say. I basically read the whole book in two sittings, feverishly flipping the pages. I started reading it, and I just could not put it down. I’m so glad I finally bought a copy of Wi ntergirls. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.” “ Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. So she tells me, the word dribbling out with the cranberry muffin crumbs, commas dunked in her coffee.

Even the most preliminary tasks are daunting. In a time of ubiquitous disgust with political and economic elites, explores the question of revolutionary agency-what social forces and conditions do we need to transform the current order?-and the situation of the world's working classes from the US to Europe to China. This will be his first book on Marxism itself. Old Gods, New Enigmas is Davis's book-length engagement with Karl Marx, marking the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth and exploring Davis's thinking on history, labor, capitalism, and revolution - themes ever present the early work from this leading radical thinker. Since then, he's developed a reputation not only for his caustic analysis of ecological catastrophe and colonial history, but as a stylist without peer. Mike Davis spent years working factory jobs and sitting behind the wheel of an eighteen wheeler before his profile as one of the world's leading urbanists emerged with the publication of his sober, if dystopian survey of Los Angeles. Old Gods, New Enigmas is the highly-anticipated book by the best-selling author of City of Quartz and Planet of Slums.

Rainbow rowell wayward son series7/6/2023 Your hero’s journey might be over – but your life has just begun. It’s another helping of sour cherry scones with an absolutely decadent amount of butter. In Simon Snow, it’s also a clear portrait of a talented and sensitive young man on the edge of existential despair, a boy just come of age who lacks the emotional language and skills to navigate a world he doesn’t feel he belongs to. And a book for everyone who was ever more curious about the second kiss than the first. Wayward Son is a tightly written, excellently paced, and wonderfully realized sequel to Carry On. With Wayward Son, Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place. Rainbow Rowell is terrific at letting her characters have Huge Important Feelings and there werent enough of them for my liking here - the protagonist gets to be depressed. Rating: 8 / 10 ( 61 votes) Your rating: Rate. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. Series: Simon Snow (2) Genres: Fiction » Fantasy, Fiction » Young Adult. Tangled truths aly beck7/5/2023 Romance is such a diverse genre that has so many different tropes and sub-genres that it's always fun to edit as no two stories are ever the same. I am a developmental editor specializing in genre-fiction, including but not limited to romance, paranormal, erotica, fantasy, sci-fi, suspense, mystery, thriller, and YA. Brainstorming is part of the fun of editing and I’ll always be by your side to help and suggest ways to improve any inconsistencies. I’m here to help you find those holes and to fix them. Plot holes happen! If you’re a writer, you have 10 million characters and stories running through your head at all times. Along the way, I discovered I loved helping authors and had a talent in developmental editing and world-building, so off I went to take classes, join the CIEP (Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading) and learn the ins and outs of professional editing. The pandemic kicked my engagement with the indie pub world to a whole new level, especially with the reverse harem community.Īs I got deeper into the community, I realized that indie authors are actually kick-ass businesswomen who wear many hats! There's so much to learn and deal with to publish one book that you need all the help you can get. I love reading and have been a romance fan since I had loins to stir.

Malcolm gladwell underdog7/5/2023 A well-known inefficiency in gambling, first identified in 1949 and known as the “ favorite-longshot bias,” derives from the fact that bettors often place too much faith in underdogs like Redwood City, and not enough in their opponents. In part because of the qualities we (wrongly) attribute to them, people tend to overestimate David’s chances. One guessed that 90 percent of the coaches make use of it, and some do so for the whole game, like Ranadivé did. And when I reached out to other coaches in the same division, they told me that the full-court press is a common strategy, no matter if the girls are underdogs or favorites. (Redwood City has excelled at NJB for many years.) The “nationals” are not, in fact, a national tournament, as the league comprises mostly teams from California. The Silicon Valley area from which the team was drawn includes lots of wealthy families, so the girls also had the benefit of high-quality training facilities and dedicated parents. Gladwell describes the coach as “a foreigner new to the game” who was helping the girls “in a sport he knew nothing about.” But Ranadivé is so ambitious, and so invested in the sport of basketball, that he brought expert help to Redwood City, including several former pro athletes. First, Ranadivé is less of an outsider than he appears to be. But certain aspects of the story push back against its central thrust.

In the second book of the trilogy, Runaway Ralph, Ralph decides he’s sick of scrounging for crumbs, and he’s had it with the scores of young siblings and cousins always begging for rides on his precious motorcycle. Through a series of humorous, kid-pleasing adventures, Ralph proves to Keith that he’s growing up, and Keith, before departing, kindly leaves his toy motorcycle in Ralph’s possession.īut that’s only the beginning of Ralph’s story. When a young boy named Keith checks into Ralph’s room, they find that mice and boys who share a love of motorcycles naturally speak the same language and become friends. Ralph is a medium-sized mouse who lives in the Mountain View Inn. The Mouse and the Motorcycle is a marvelously imaginative story delivered with just the right blend of adventure and fun. Maybe I just love the idea of a young mouse who trills with the speed of a tiny red motorcycle trimmed with shiny chrome and dual exhausts. Maybe I remember being a bit irresponsible and wanting so much to grow up. There’s just something about that precocious little fella that gets me every time. As a kid, I dearly loved Ramona, but my all-time favorite Cleary character has to be Ralph S. In honor of Beverly Cleary, who passed this year at the age of 104, I’ve chosen three of her works for this week’s MMGM. Greg Pattridge hosts Marvelous Middle Grade Monday (MMGM) on his Always in the Middle website each week.

You fall in love with them and are left with all the feels.Ī glorious five out of five stars for me, The Lincoln Highway will be my go-to recommendation this fall.” And Billy is the smartest, sweetest kid who inspires those around him. Emmett is the stoic, do-right midwesterner who always fixes the messes. Duchess and Woolly, the stowaways, felt like a modern day George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men with Woolly's gentle giant innocence and Duchess' take-the-lead wile. You feel so deeply about every single one of them and it feels like they leap off the page with specificities with which they are written. You cannot beat the quirkiness of Towles' characters. This felt like a modern classic, the new and updated version of Huckleberry Finn that I actually wanted to read in high school. From the first page, I was immediately drawn into Towles' magical writing and superb characters. “THIS BOOK EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS! As a huge fan of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility, The Lincoln Highway had a lot of pressure and holy cow did it surpass anything I could have hoped for.

Tia williams books in order7/4/2023 And, for me, laughing at nonsense makes life more palatable. Life is nuts, and even the darkest parts can have an absurdist spin. I love to draw the humor out in almost everything. It’s actually hard for me to write anything in a super-straightforward, straight-faced way, which is one of the reasons I went into magazine writing instead of newspaper reporting. TIA WILLIAMS: Thank you! That’s always my goal, so this is fabulous to hear. How do you so effectively write prose that balances trauma and humor? You do it exceptionally well. KATIE TAMOLA: The book establishes a very authentically human and funny tone. Shondaland caught up with Williams to discuss Seven Days in June, second chances, balancing emotions in her writing, the limitless expectations of being a Black woman, and more. Things didn’t exactly end well, and what later unfurls is a engrossing story of reconnection, true love, genuine pain, and all the beautiful and hurtful things that make up a life in between. Shane is naturally intimidating with his poignant talent and GQ-esque face, but this run-in is also inherently unnerving for Eva since the two kind of fell in love with each other years ago when they were teenagers. It’s difficult to be a best-selling writer at any turn, but Eva is completely thrown for a loop when she runs into award-winning literary icon Shane Hall at a panel for Black authors. The book follows Eva, a brilliant, best-selling erotica author and amazing mother who is trying her best to juggle it all while also dealing with a chronic case of horrible migraines. |
